New York City
New York City, known as the Big Apple and "The city that never sleeps" is an unique place which is widely considered the symbol of democracy and the American dream. The city at the mouth of the Hudson River on the Atlantic coast is one of the world's leading centers of business and finance but it is also home to one of the most recognizable skylines in the world, numerous iconic landmarks, world-class museums and art galleries, outstanding theaters and shows, great shopping opportunities, ... you name it. The Big Apple is one of the world's premium city break destinations offering an unforgettable experience to all its visitors all year round.
New York City is a huge city consisting of five boroughs each of which has its own character and offers an unique experience. Manhattan is undoubtedly the best place to start with. It is home to the famous Manhattan skyline featuring several world's tallest buildings with the 102-story Empire State Building as the tallest and most famous of all. One of the most iconic skyscrapers in the world was the world's tallest building from its construction in 1931 until the completion of the World Trade Center North Tower in 1972. Following the September 11 attacks, the Empire State Building again became the tallest structure in New York City. The Empire State Building observatory offers a breathtaking view of the cityscape though it is worth to keep in mind that all tourists want to enjoy the view of the New York City from the iconic skyscrapers.
It is best to visit the Empire State Building in the evening hours to avoid standing in line up to four hours and enjoy the day view of the New York City from the "Top of the Rock" as the Rockefeller Center observation deck is popularly called. Other notable landmarks in Manhattan you should not miss include the iconic Times Square, Wall Street, world-famous Central Park, Greenwich Village Historic District, SoHo-Cast Iron Historic Districts, Chrysler Building, Woolworth Building, Metropolitan Life Tower, Flatiron Building and several other architectural treasures. Do not forget that Manhattan is also home to the Broadway theatre and some of the finest museums in the world such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Art and numerous smaller galleries. Visit the Fifth Avenue for an ultimate shopping experience.
Another must-see landmark in New York City is definitely the Statue of Liberty, especially if visiting the city for the first time. Probably the most famous symbol of the city and the entire nation is located on the Liberty Island and can be reached by a ferry leaving from the Battery Park in Lower Manhattan every half of an hour. The ferries also stop at the Ellis Island where you can visit the Immigration Museum.
Manhattan sightseeing and trip to the Statue of Liberty offer an unforgettable experience but the other four boroughs; Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island should be visited as well to make the New York City experience complete.
